The City of Topeka completed a street scape improvements project for Downtown Topeka in 2015 based on a downtown master plan. Included in the master plan were recommendations for a public plaza to be located in Downtown Topeka. HTK provided site evaluations on over ten different potential locations in downtown. The location at 7th and Kansas Avenue was chose for its proximity to Kansas Avenue and its central location in the heart of downtown. The plaza features 45,000 SF of programmable open space with a outdoor stage, video wall, 16’ fire pit and a 50+ jet dry deck fountain complete with audio, visual and lighting. The plaza features materials inspired from the surrounding landscape. Grays and tans in pavers and stone elements reflect the colors of the flint hills, while steel stage structures and light towers hearken to the railroad that cuts through Topeka. Year-round programming will draw residents and visitor into downtown helping to spur further redevelopment downtown.
