HTK Architects lead the design and construction administration for the minor remodel of Mabee Library, transforming it into the short-term home for Washburn University’s School of Applied Studies (SAS) and Criminal Justice (CJ) programs. This renovation aimed to accommodate these departments as they transitioned from Benton Hall while a permanent facility is developed.
The project included the verification and optimization of office and meeting room layouts to ensure they effectively meet faculty and staff needs. Specialized spaces, such as a radiology lab with lead-lined walls, were designed to support academic and research functions. Additionally, new restrooms were constructed on the second floor to enhance accessibility and accommodate increased occupancy. The existing HVAC system, originally designed for an open library layout, was reconfigured to provide efficient climate control and energy management for the newly subdivided spaces. To support modern learning environments, IT and AV systems were integrated in accordance with Washburn University’s classroom and office technology standards. The renovation also included necessary ADA upgrades to ensure full accessibility. As part of the transition, an inventory of furniture from Benton Hall was conducted to facilitate relocation and maximize space efficiency.
HTK Architects collaborated closely with Washburn University representatives, the selected Construction Manager, and engineering consultants to maintain an organized scope, budget, and timeline. The project was funded through an ARPA Grant, with all involved vendors meeting sam.gov approval requirements. Completed in April 2025, this renovation provides a well-equipped, functional space for SAS and CJ while Washburn University develops their permanent home.
