Blue Valley reached out to HTK to design a maker space within their early childhood center, Hilltop. The maker space would be utilized by elementary students throughout the district. Hilltop Early Childhood Center is an existing two story school; with the second level of the building largely unfinished. The new maker space is located in the previously vacant shell space above the school’s main office. One of the main challenges of the project was having construction take place inside an active and operational early childhood center. Construction was scheduled for nights and weekends to work around the school’s schedule. Some of the features within the maker space include: lots of natural daylight from floor to ceiling windows; exposed structure and an industrial aesthetic; and durable simple finishes for longevity.
