HTK designed the Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ) as a centralized hub for the Army and Air National Guard, supporting training, administration, logistics, and secure communications. Serving as a mobilization platform during Federal and State activations, the facility brings together Reserve Component personnel and provides headquarters space for both TOE and TDA organizations.
The project began with a multi-day charrette involving Kansas National Guard leadership and key stakeholders to define the program and evaluate site strategies. This collaborative approach allowed early design decisions to be made efficiently, supporting an accelerated schedule.
Despite a compact footprint, thoughtful space planning ensured efficient workflows and natural daylight access for most occupied areas. The design features various workstation types tailored to organizational needs, acoustically enhanced conference rooms for secure communication, and a geothermal HVAC system that improves indoor air quality and thermal comfort without using combustible fuels.
Situated within the secured perimeter of Forbes Field, the facility includes additional security systems such as access control, surveillance, and mass notification. It meets all accessibility, life safety, and emergency preparedness standards, supporting the Guard’s mission in a secure and resilient environment.
