HTK produced a report assessing all City of Topeka fleet maintenance facilities. The report included studies of over ten sites to determine a suitable location for a consolidated fleet maintenance facility. The city needed to relocate the light duty facility due to the Polk-Quincy Viaduct project. Following the report is was decided to relocate to an existing structure at the previous White Lakes mall complex. The space was renovated into vehicle work bays, garage support space, parts storage and distribution, and administrative space.
This project makes use of an existing structure. Reusing an existing structure saves the material and energy it would take to produce materials such as concrete foundations and slabs, structural steel, and masonry. We also took steps to improve the energy performance of the existing structure by providing LED lighting, new energy efficient overhead doors, and new HVAC system.
A special feature of this project is taking an under utilized building and site and giving it new purpose. Projects such as these contribute to the growth, security, and economy of the surrounding neighborhood.
